In floating (especially if this is your first session), the following transformation occurs with consciousness in almost everyone: for the first 10-20 minutes, it gets used to the new conditions, when there are no external stimuli. It may start to run from thought to thought, and may even “panic” a little from the darkness or confined space. If this happens, try to use classical meditative techniques.
MEDITATIVE PRACTICES IN FLOATING
The simplest meditation technique is to count your inhalations and exhalations backwards, from 10 to 1: inhale-ten, exhale-nine, inhale-eight, exhale-seven, and so on. To enhance the effect, try (BUT NOT OBLIGATORY) “ujjayi” breathing. This technique is performed by partially constricting the glottis with an effort of will; you can force your vocal cords to take a position similar to the position when whispering. You can whisper something, understand how your ligaments have taken this “flat” position, and start breathing, noisily exhaling and inhaling air. This type of breathing promotes relaxation, since there are many receptors responsible for relaxation around the glottis.
You can also use the body scan technique — “scan” your body with your inner eye from your toes to the top of your head. An example of how to do this: you mentally say “toes” and try to feel your toes, to grasp what they are feeling at the moment. Then say “feet” or “ankles” — and transfer your attention to them. Then rise higher and higher, right up to your eyes, ears, back of the head, etc. This should be done slowly and consciously, transferring your focus to the part of the body you are concentrating on.
WHAT AFTER HALF AN HOUR OF FLOATING?
And here is where the fun begins. Your consciousness will have already adjusted to the new environment, and your body will have relaxed enough. Some people simply switch off and fall asleep - don't be afraid of this, it is impossible to drown in floating, the depth is too shallow, and the density of the water is too high. You will simply have a wonderful rest if you fall asleep - an hour of sleep in floating replaces 6 hours of normal sleep. Also, don't be afraid to miss the end of the session - you will be awakened by light meditative music that will start playing at the end, the "starry sky" will softly light up above you. Unexpected images and insights may come in a dream.
Some people do not fall asleep - insights and epiphanies may come to them in a conscious state. In floating, there are very often cases when people receive answers to their troubling questions by themselves. This is easily explained, because in a relaxed state the brain works without the usual stress and background mode.
